Â
In June of each year, we ask agencies such as Meals on Wheels, Mountain Projects, Haywood Christian Ministry and Good Samaritan Clinic to give us names of people that might benefit from a Day of Caring project. The agencies determine if there is a true financial need. Most of the time, people are not receiving services from an agency unless they have a limited income. Â
We ask companies to loan employees to us for the day to complete these projects. It’s a good team building exercise for employees to spend a day outside the normal work environment and we’ve also found that those who work on Day of Caring tend to give more to the United Way campaign.
Â
We match the volunteers with projects based on the skill level. The leader of the team goes out to the project about a month before Day of Caring and makes a materials list. This list is given to Rebecca Stamey who gathers the materials and supplies needed to complete the job. Some of these materials are donated. We budget some funds for Day of Caring along with other agencies we support.Â
Â
As the teams are working on the Day of Caring, Â if a team runs into a situation where they need more supplies, they can purchase them up to $50 and get reimbursed by UW, Â or call a planning committee member to get authorization to charge it to our account at Haywood Builders Supply.Â
